ACT I · CURIOSITY

Before I knew the word engineering, I was already trying to understand how things worked.

Science came first: small classroom experiments, electricity, friction, chemistry and the satisfaction of seeing an idea become visible.

Outside the classroom, curiosity became physical. I climbed with my father, learned the water, earned a boating licence at seven and later trained in marine radio. Music, theatre, film and magic gave the same instinct a different language: observe closely, practise, then perform.

ACT II · INTERRUPTION

Illness changed the scale of time.

I was diagnosed with chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) and juvenile arthritis. The years that followed involved pain, treatment, procedures and a close familiarity with the healthcare system. I do not think of that period primarily in terms of hardship. It gave me an unusual perspective at a young age. I learned to pay attention to how systems work, how people respond under uncertainty, and how small decisions in communication and care can materially change someone’s experience.

It was simply part of growing up, but it shaped the way I think.

ACT III · USEFULNESS

Experience became something I could use.

As my health improved, I began working with youth advisory groups connected with BC Children’s Hospital. I contributed to patient education, pain initiatives, transition-to-adult-care work, public speaking and fundraising.

The point was simple: if first-hand experience could make the next patient’s path even slightly clearer, it was worth contributing.

Get Orientated

A hospital orientation video in which I appeared as the lead, helping explain check-in, extended stays and procedure preparation.

Miracle Weekend

Three consecutive years co-hosting the BC Children’s Hospital fundraiser with Global Television.

A later pain conference in Victoria became another opportunity to speak from lived experience about pediatric care and chronic pain.

ACT IV · BUILDING OUTWARD

The questions got larger. So did the tools.

At UBC I moved from science into applied science, studying across mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical subjects and pre-medical coursework.

Programming entered the picture through classmates in computer science, then became its own long-running education. I kept learning because software could turn a physical idea into a system — and a system into something that could evolve.

21 INNOVATIONS

A workshop where disciplines stopped being separate.

I founded 21 Innovations while at university as a practical environment for prototyping, product development, software and manufacturing preparation.

01 · DESIGN

Research, model and reduce an idea to something that can actually be tested.

02 · MAKE

Build the equipment when necessary, then fabricate the part: CNC, additive manufacturing, electronics and PCB prototyping.

03 · CONNECT

Use software and controls to turn individual components into a working system.

04 · ITERATE

Observe the real failure modes, improve the design and repeat without becoming attached to the first answer.

WHEN THE WORLD NEEDED THINGS QUICKLY

Building became a form of response.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked on ventilators and manufactured and supplied personal protective equipment as charitable work.

It reinforced something I had learned earlier: technical ability matters most when it can be made useful to somebody else.

STILL LEARNING PHYSICALLY

Some lessons are better learned in motion.

Climbing, boating, flying and scuba diving keep a different kind of attention sharp: systems are no longer abstract when the environment answers back immediately.

PHILANTHROPY · PRACTICAL SERVICE

Some of the most meaningful work was simply finding a useful way to contribute.

The settings changed — a family residence, hospital corridors, public stages and a workshop during a pandemic — but the principle stayed consistent: use what I knew to make something easier, clearer or safer for somebody else.

Ronald McDonald House

As a young magician, I founded and ran a weekly magic program for families staying at Ronald McDonald House, using performance as a small way to bring distraction and normalcy into a difficult setting.

BC Children’s Hospital

Through youth advisory and related initiatives, I contributed to patient preparation, pediatric-to-adult-care transition, complex pain work, drug-prevention education and ChildKind projects, bringing a patient perspective into the design of care.

Advocacy, education & fundraising

I appeared in Get Orientated, which was viewed more than one million times; co-hosted Global TV’s Miracle Weekend for three consecutive years; spoke at the Crystal Ball Gala; and later addressed a pediatric pain conference in Victoria.

COVID-19 response

During the pandemic, I built ventilators and manufactured and supplied personal protective equipment as charitable work, applying engineering and fabrication capacity where shortages were immediate.

THE STORY, SO FAR

I still want to know how things work.

The scale has changed. The instinct has not. Pay attention. Learn the system. Build carefully. Keep going.
